Cohabitation has become a way of life for many couples in America. The world has rejected the restraints and commitments incumbent with a marriage contract, choosing instead to “live together” or “shack up” in a relationship not sanctified by God. These couples experience the physical companionship of a traditional marriage, but they miss out on the blessings God bestows a Godly marriage.
On the spiritual level, however, God blesses cohabitation if you select the proper partner. The correct partner in His eyes is not another man or woman, but the Holy Spirit, whom He sent to indwell us with the Spirit of Truth (John 14:16-17). He is our Counselor and Teacher, (John 14:26) and is the One who seals us as a child of God, guaranteeing or salvation and inheritance (Ephesians 13-14).
If you are cohabitating with the Holy Spirit, you are in good standing in God’s eyes. Every facet of genuine salvation is initiated by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and a Christian is a person who has been Spirit-born (John 3:3-8), that is, they are cohabitating with the Holy Spirit.
The Bible tells us plainly, “Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.” (Romans 8:9b). The Apostle Paul cuts right to the chase when he tells us this important Truth. If you are not cohabitating with the Holy Spirit, you do not belong to Christ. It is that simple. For it is this same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead and, since we are all dead through sin (Romans 5:12), the Spirit gives life to our mortal bodies (Romans 8:11).
It is a basic fact of Christianity – the Holy Spirit cohabits with every believer. In fact, if the Holy Spirit is not living inside of you, you are not a Christian. This fact has come as a shock to people since Jesus walked this Earth. Nicodemus, a learned and religious man, was confused when Jesus told him, “No one can enter the Kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying ‘You must be born again.’“ (John 3:5-7).
Spiritual rebirth is what differentiates Christianity from man-made religious belief systems. Every other religion of the world has a set of holy writings, rituals and rites, rules and codes of ethics by which to abide, and certain duties and obligations. However, only Christianity has the living Holy Spirit of God, who literally comes to live inside you, to cohabitate with you. As your constant companion and Counselor, He can comfort you, empower you, convict you, guide you, teach you, pray with you (Romans 8:26), and impart the very life of Christ to you.
Based on these Truths, a very powerful deduction can be made – there is a difference between a religious person and a Spirit-born person that determines your eternity. A Spirit-born person is normal, a religious person is not. Religion is death, but the Spirit is life and life eternal. Religion is burdensome, but the Spirit is empowering. Religion is empty, but the Spirit is fulfilling. As a wise person once said, “Religion is man’s search for God; Christianity is God’s search for man.” God the Holy Spirit is looking for souls with whom He may cohabitate. Is He living and active in you?
Learning correct Christian doctrine and dogma is admirable, but if you do not have the supernatural, Almighty, life-giving Holy Spirit of God, all you have is religion and not Christianity. If you don’t have the Spirit of God cohabitating with you, you are spiritually dead. “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.” (Ephesians 2:1). The Bible tells us it is possible to be physically alive but spiritually dead. This is the message Jesus was sending to Nicodemus.
God teaches us unquestionably through His Holy Word that His type of cohabitation is normal, because it brings life instead of death. He tells us what makes a Christian a Christian is spiritual rebirth by the Spirit of God. Those who have never been reborn are living in the flesh. Those who cohabit with the supernaturally infused living person of the Holy Spirit of God have been transformed to the normal state God desires for all of us. Whereas God is against cohabitation in matters of the flesh, He desperately wants you to be in cohabitation with the Spirit. Be normal and find eternal salvation through the One partner who can conquer death.
